Swarm Season in Memphis: What It Is, Why It Happens, and What to Do

If you've ever walked outside to find a massive cluster of bees hanging from your oak tree, your fence post, or your mailbox — you've witnessed one of nature's most fascinating events: a honeybee swarm.

What Is a Swarm?

A swarm happens when a colony outgrows its home. The old queen leaves with roughly half the worker bees to find a new location. They cluster together — sometimes 10,000 to 20,000 bees — while scout bees search for a permanent home. This cluster phase usually lasts 24 to 72 hours.

Are Swarms Dangerous?

Swarms are actually the gentlest bees you'll ever encounter. They have no home to defend, no honey to protect, and no brood to guard. They're focused entirely on finding a new home. Unprovoked swarms almost never sting.

That said — don't poke them, spray them, or try to move them yourself. A startled swarm will defend itself.

Why Memphis Gets Hit Hard

The Mid-South's mild winters mean colonies build up fast. By April and May, established colonies are bursting at the seams and ready to split. Add in the region's abundance of mature trees and older homes with gaps and voids, and you have perfect swarm conditions.

We typically see peak swarm activity from late March through June, with a second smaller wave in early fall.

What You Should Do

Call a beekeeper immediately. A swarm is the easiest and cheapest bee situation to resolve — we can often collect the entire cluster in under 30 minutes. Wait too long and they'll move into your walls, your attic, or a neighbor's tree hollow. At that point, you're looking at a full structural removal.
